Naval Hospital rings in the New Year with a new baby

Evana means "God is gracious" in Russian, a name Patrick became dead set on using when he found it while searching for baby names.

While in the hospital, Melissa was reacquainted with a high school friend, Shantell North who is a registered nurse at Naval now.

"I couldn't believe it," North said when the two realized who each other was. "I haven't seen her since high school. It's a small world."

A tradition since 2004, members of the Oak Leaf Club presented a giant gift basket to the Ebilis for having the first baby born at Naval in the New Year.

"We just like to welcome the first baby with something special," said club president Nina Lafferty.

The Oak Leaf Club is a social organization made up of Navy officer spouses.

Mayesville mayor unhappy with waste decision

"It's like giving a baby a bottle and then taking it away," she said. "To me, I just can't live with doing it this way without having the mayor here."

"People in Dalzell are paying for Mayesville to have garbage service," countered County Councilman Artie Baker. "Why should people in Dalzell pay for service anywhere else? ... Mayesville is not the only part of the county with financial problems."

Later, Baker added, "Isn't that the same town that hired their own chief of police? We were providing service for them. I don't know."

Mayesville Town Council agreed to wait for a response from its attorney before taking action.

In other business, council voted to purchase the Bland Property at 22 Republic Street, which boasts stables that date back to the 1800s.

Co-star has big things to say about Pitt

She credits John Singleton with her big break in movies, in the director's 2001 L.A. family drama "Baby Boy."

It was Henson's performance in 2005's "Hustle & Flow" -- as Shug, the pregnant prostitute opposite Terrence Howard's pimp -- that brought her to the attention of Benjamin Button's casting director, Laray Mayfield.

"I didn't think I had a chance at getting the role because it's a big-studio film with big names attached, and I just figured they're going to go for a big name," Henson said, about going for her audition. "But unbeknownst to me, Laray had seen -- two years prior to 'Ben Button' even being green-lit -- she had seen 'Hustle & Flow.' She was in the theater watching my performance and she called Fincher and she said, 'I found Queenie.'"

Henson, a single mom with a 14-year-old son, has three titles coming this year.
