A dating service for those who think affairs help marriages

In an effort to attract women to the site, Biderman and his colleagues combined two of today's most popular baby names and invented their fictional proprietor.

By tracking information provided on user profiles, Biderman has been able to learn quite a bit about his clients, even if he doesn't know their real names. Seventy per cent are men, he says; among those who are ''active'' members (sign-up is free but you must purchase credits to interact with others), the male-to-female ratio is 1-1. The majority of the men, who tend to be in their late 30s to early 40s, are married. .

Pet owners mad for Max

Many of 2008's top pet names also rank among the Social Security Administration's most popular baby names, such as Bella, Chloe and Sophie.

"Pets are often viewed as members of the family, treated like members of the family and, as a result, named like members of the family," says Curtis Steinhoff, the company's top communications officer.

For the sixth year in a row, Max was the most popular name for dogs and cats nationally in 2008, according to Veterinary Pet Insurance. Poor Rover was No. 2,534 on the list, making it less popular than names such as Zowie, Munchie, Grendel and Ginger Snap.

At right is how the top pet names rank nationally compared to the most popular monikers in Ohio and Kentucky.
